Yet another Romero remake now, with 1973's sci-fi horror flick The Crazies, centered around a small American town whose residents are transformed into feral killers following the accidental release of a biological agent.

With the remake coming from Sahara director Breck Eisner, it was easy to have low expectations from the jump, even if The Crazies isn't one of Romero's better movies.

But credit to Eisner for maintaining and updating the film's original political messaging, nimbly exploring small-town mindsets, distrust of the government, and the sheer panic induced by a pandemic - the latter being something we all now have first-hand knowledge of.

It also clips along at a frantic, panicked pace, offers up some brutal kills, and boasts a solid cast, led by the ever-great Timothy Olyphant.

The Crazies was a modest critical and commercial success but is rarely given the flowers it deserves for being an extremely effective blunt object of a movie - the sort of efficient genre romp we'd surely all love to see more of.
