This category was a weird one. Alejandro G. Inarritu and George Miller for The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road was completely deserving nominees, but the other three were surprising choices.

Spotlight is an amazing movie but it shouldn't have been nominated for Best Director, since while Tom McCarthy's ultra-subtle directing was decent, it did feel a little TV movie-like at times and was the film's single weakest element. Similarly, Lenny Abrahamson and Adam McKay did good but forgettable jobs with Room and The Big Short respectively.

Corrected:

First-up, the surprising omission of Ridley Scott for The Martian could easily have been corrected by swapping him out for one of those three, while both Justin Kurzel and David Robert Mitchell (for 2015's Macbeth and It Follows respectively) would've been great inclusions since both those films were not only visually brilliant but they were very visual films in which it was down to the director that they worked as well as they did.
