20 Things Horror Movies NEED To Stop Doing

6. "Based On A True Story"

Horror Movie Tropes Bad

There's an undeniable subset of viewers who are drawn to movies that are based on a true story, but this is obviously inherently at odds with the horror genre, which is typically rooted in the supernatural, the sublime, and the not-remotely-true.

So it's usually tough not to laugh when a horror film without an obvious grounding in reality is sold as "based on a true story" - the most daft example right now probably being the Conjuring movies.

Even beyond the silliness of implying that the supernatural hooey is in anyway tethered to our own reality, there's the series' sanitised depiction of the Warren family, who don't appear to be nearly as wholesome and likeable as they're depicted in the movies.

But more broadly speaking, to all but the most steadfast of believers in ghosts, demons, and so on, does the veil of apparent reality really add anything at all to a horror movie?
