20 Things You Didn’t Know About Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Producer, Barbara Broccoli asked long-time Bond composer, John Barry to return to score Bond 18, but they could not agree on his salary.

Nevertheless, Barry recommended that David Arnold score the film based on Arnold’s successful 1997 album, Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond Project, which paid tribute to previous Bond title themes. Arnold enthusiastically followed in John Barry’s footsteps, taking inspiration from Barry's soundtrack scores to From Russia With Love (1963) and Goldfinger.

However, even though Arnold collaborated with British vocalist, David McAlmont and lyricist, Don Black on a main title theme, MGM selected a song by American pop country singer, Sheryl Crow instead.

Nevertheless, Arnold’s theme was retitled “Surrender” and performed by Canadian singer, k.d. lang over the film’s end credits, recalling Dame Shirley Bassey’s work on the franchise. Arnold used the melody to Surrender throughout the film’s score.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
