20 Things You Didn’t Know About Trainspotting
1. Why "Trainspotting"?
Perhaps the biggest mystery coming into, and admittedly out of, Danny Boyle's sensational Scot-flick centred around what in God's name the title was alluding to.
With the film itself not exactly focusing on a bunch of train spotters tackling their inner demons, much to Oasis' disappointment, what was Irvine Welsh's thought process when it came time to label this monumental feat?
Well, the author himself has confessed that the title is a reference to an act that, to those who don't partake in or derive pleasure from it, is seemingly pointless from the outside looking in. Just as trainspotting is seen as a waste of time to those who don't gain excitement from the sight of locomotives flying down a track, non-addicts view heroin in a similar light, not understanding why they choose to use.
The title also has some of its origins in a scene from the book involving Renton and Begbie meeting "an auld drunkard" (Begbie's estranged father) as they use an old train station as a loo, only to be asked if they were "trainspottin".
So, there you have it. Feel free to use all of said trivia on your next trip down to the local.
