20 Things You Didn't Know About A View To A Kill (1985)

12. Move Over GoldenEye

Double-0 Seven is a primary enemy of the Soviet Union and, even after the Cold War is over, Pierce Brosnan’s James Bond claims in GoldenEye (1995) that he used to regularly “shoot in and out” of Russia.

Amazingly, A View to a Kill was the first time in which Bond was shown on a mission in Soviet Russia (he had been to East Germany in Octopussy), right at the end of Roger Moore’s tenure as the suave spy and a decade before GoldenEye.

Although Russians and their territory had been a key element of From Russia With Love (1963) and The Man With The Golden Gun had marked the first time that a Bond film had been shown behind the Iron Curtain, GoldenEye cannot claim to be the first Bond film to show Double-0 Seven in Russia. It was, however, the first Bond film to be shot in Russia.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
