18. A Troubled Production

It is safe to say that MI2 was not the easiest movie to make and it was certainly the most difficult Mission: Impossible to film until Tom Cruise broke his ankle while shooting Fallout.

There were a large number of extremely crazy and dangerous stunts that almost went wrong and some that were so risky that director John Woo couldn’t bear to watch (more on that later).

A large number of different directors and writers were attached to the film during it’s early development resulting in multiple rewrites and scripting problems. Brian De Palma, director of the first Mission: Impossible had been set to return but then dropped out furthering confusion.

Things got so bad with the Paramount that Tom Cruise apparently funded part of the movie personally when the studio didn’t back him.

All of this resulted in MI2’s filming running wildly overschedule, which in turn had some pretty interesting consequences….
