20 Things You Didn't Know About Speed

10. The Ill-Fated Rescue Attempt

There are storyboards available for a scene scripted but never shot entitled "Officer Baker's failed rescue." Based on the drawings, the bomb squad attempts to retrieve the stranded bus passengers by dangling the ill-fated Baker (a character who isn't actually in the final film) from a helicopter. Things seem to be going successfully, until they come across an overhanging bridge, leading to Baker's death.

It's the kind of dumb action-movie logic you're thankful the film avoided, as including it would have negated Whedon's addition of the bomber's security camera. The boards can be found on the Region One special edition DVD with optional commentary from De Bont.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
