20 Things You Didn't Know About Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984)

8. Christopher Lloyd Both Really Enjoyed, And Had Issues With, Commander Kruge

As mentioned, Christopher Lloyd, now best known to audiences as Doc Emmett Brown in the Back To The Future movies, was cast as Kruge. He had been best known to audiences in those days from his stint on Taxi, where he played a comedic character. There had been some concern about his appearing in the film, but this was something that Leonard Nimoy pushed back on.

When the concerns of typecasting were raised, Nimoy quickly quashed them. He used himself as an example, stating that though his appearance as Spock was so well known to audiences, it was not the only character that he had played in his career. He argued that if he could successfully break the typecast of Spock, then Lloyd could do it with Reverand Jim.

For his part, Lloyd was mostly happy with how the part turned out. He felt that he was able to successfully deliver the performance that he wanted. However, in the case of everyone being their own worst critic, he stated in the making of documentary that he would love another crack at a few of the scenes so that he could better tackle some of the more expressive moments.
