In 1996, Astronomers from the organization Spacewatch discovered and named an asteroid "12818 Tomhanks" after the actor, and its details are free to review in NASA's online database.
They were inspired by Hanks contributions to their field in Apollo 13 (1995). Hanks has had a devout interest in the space program since the days of the Apollo 7 mission in 1968 when he was just 12 years old.
