There have been different ways each of the three live-action Spider-Man iterations have portrayed Peter Parker as being incredibly nerdy. One of the biggest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that the young Peter Parker is a huge Star Wars fan.

He and Ned share a love for the franchise, and have built huge Lego sculptures of the Death Star together, but Peter first referenced the galaxy far, far away in Civil War. To take down Giant-Man, he used the same technique as the rebellion did to subdue the Republic’s AT-ATs. There was one tiny detail in this that does raise a question about just how much he loves Star Wars, however.

One of the key locations in The Empire Strikes Back is Hoth, and every Star Wars fan knows the name, but Peter referred to it simply as ‘the snow planet’. He also called the AT-ATs the ‘giant walking thingies’. There are two possible explanations for this.

One is that Peter is a kid, and while he loves Star Wars, doesn’t necessarily take too much notice of names and planets, etc. The other, though, and this writer’s personal favourite, is that since he referred to The Empire Strikes Back as a really old movie, he doesn’t think Tony or Rhodey would know what he was talking about if he actually used words like Hoth and AT-AT. Does he think Star Wars is too old even for Iron Man and War Machine?
