In the film's second act, Ryan Stone attempts to make contact with Earth after it becomes clear that she is her only hope for survival. In the process of trying to seek out for help, the story's protagonist is able to contact Aningaaq, a Greenlandic fisherman.

Stone's interaction with the Earthbound individual is hampered by a shaky connection and language barrier, but despite these hurdles the brief conversation they share resonates deeply for both of them. This is seen in Aningaaq's eponymously titled short film, which was written and directed by Jonas Cuaron and released shortly after the sci-fi survival drama.

Here, the titular hunter is depicted as a warm but conflicted man due to his pondering over his ailing dog's health. Despite the animal's barks (and Aningaaq's baby's cries) giving Ryan a brief respite, the protagonist of the seven-minute story is forced to kill his pet to put her out of her misery.
