20 Things You Somehow Missed In Jaws

6. The First Shark Killed Was Real

Jaws Ending
Universal Pictures

The main shark was comprised of three different mechanical models, each with different functions. They proved very problematic and difficult to use with but they were obviously easier to work with than real great whites.

Occasionally, Spielberg could get away with using real ones, such as for the first shark killed on the docks. There was not one big enough in the coast of Martha’s Vineyard so they killed one in Florida and shipped it over to the set. By the time it was prepped and ready for the scene, the body was decomposing and literally caused a great stink. The actors on set had to power through the stench as it became more and more pungent.
