As a result of Jon Grief putting heat behind his throw, Jon Heder ended up with legitimate injury to his face. Although, having a skilled former baseball player hawk anything at your head could only end in agony. The impact was so hard it negated the need for a brutal sound effect. Rewatching the scene, you will see a steak used as an authentic improvised weapon.

Sean Covel recalled:

"[The steak] smokes Jon [Heder]. Cuts him. His glasses cut him. So, we had to patch him up. Fortunately, we were going into a weekend [...] he had time to heal-up before we put him back through make-up."

Heder truly took one for the movie. However, this would not be his worst on-screen injury. In his next blockbuster Blades of Glory (2007), Heder broke his ankle while ice skating. This shut down production for 11 weeks, during which he began strength training with ice skating icon Michelle Kwan’s trainer.
