20 Things You Somehow Missed In Never Say Never Again

9. Ronald Pickup As M's Assistant

Bond And Domino Never Say Never Again
Warner Bros Pictures/MGM

Ronald Pickup is best known for his work on British television, having appeared in such series as Morse, Silent Witness, Waking the Dead, and Midsomer Murders. However, he also appeared in films such as 1973's The Day of the Jackal, as the forger with a penchant for blackmail, opposite Edward Fox, who portrayed M in Never Say Never Again.

Pickup featured as M's assistant, Elliott (who is possibly a replacement for the MI6 Chief of Staff, Bill Tanner). He provides some exposition to the plot, particularly when the nuclear missiles are stolen, but otherwise has little to do, especially when compared to M, Pamela Salem's Miss Moneypenny, and Alec McCowan's Algernon (a.k.a. Q).

Why Elliott was not simply named Bill Tanner remains a mystery, particularly since Tanner did not become a regular feature of the Eon Bond films until Daniel Craig's outings.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
