20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Big Lebowski
18. The Dude's Dated Debt
There's a visual cue to the Dude's carelessly haphazard way of living that occurs early on in the film that probably slipped right past you.
When writing a check for 69 cents at the grocery store, a speech from George H. W. Bush referring to the first Iraq war plays in the background. This lets the audience know the film's taking place in late 1990 or early 1991.
When the Dude post-dates the check for September of 1991, it's obvious to see just how broke he is. (This timeline placement also opens up the movie to a few inconsistencies and inaccuracies, but we'll get to those.)
