The ending of the Dark World revealed that Loki successfully took over the throne of Asgard and managed to convince everyone around him that he was Odin. Ragnarok inevitably undoes this, as Loki's vanity led to his scheme been unravelled by Thor early on in the film.

After this, the brothers make their way to Earth to find their father and make their peace with him. While Odin's story in Ragnarok ended relatively peacefully, the preceding film had a far grimmer fate for the All-Father. According to that flick's director, Alan Taylor, Loki killed his father and then took over the throne immediately after.

However, this was retconned as Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige wanted the God of Mischief to be more likeable in the threequel.
