20 Times Directors You Trust Totally Let You Down

3. Hideo Nakata - The Ring Two

The Ring Two Emily Vancamp
DreamWorks Pictures

The Director:

The director of Ring and Dark Water among others, Hideo Nakata is a true J-Horror master and behind some of the creepiest images in the history of cinema.

The Film:

The American remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 masterpiece Ring was a huge success, and a sequel was inevitable. They decided to bring in Nakata himself to direct the sequel, and for a studio horror sequel that's a very wise move. Unfortunately, they didn't get anything else right with this film at all.

The RIng Two has a ghastly and stupid script, but usually good directors have a lovely knack of making weak material visually interesting. Sadly, Nakata entirely fails to do that here, and it's clear that you're watching the work of someone who really didn't care and really didn't want to be there. Unfortunately, as well as being poorly written, the film is also wildly fear-free. In this writer's opinion, The Ring Two is one of the worst horror movies of all time.

The only thing you're going to remember is a certain scene involving CGI deer, which is somehow even stupider than the opening of Grown Ups 2.

Has He Bounced Back?

No. You won't have heard of any of his recent films aside from Chatroom, which wasn't successful. It sadly seems his best days are behind him.
