20 Upcoming Action Movies That Could Beat Mad Max: Fury Road
5. Pacific Rim 2
Release Date: August 4, 2017 Why It Could Beat Fury Road: Guillermo del Toro's tribute to classic monster movies (albeit with a contemporary twist) may not have been perfect, but what it did better than anything was build a convincing and thoroughly interesting world mythology. Despite the human victory at the end of the first film, there was clearly plenty of Kaiju lore left to explore for sequels, and that's exactly what del Toro needs to do in Pacific Rim 2. The primal thrill of watching a giant robot smack around a giant monster isn't a million miles away from what Fury Road pulled off, to get the adrenal gland flowing above all else. Sure, Pacific Rim didn't suggest much in terms of smart plotting, but it did feature memorable and well-developed (not to mention hilariously-named) characters, and hopefully a sequel would reunite viewers with at least a few of them. How Likely Is It?: 4/10. Del Toro will hopefully push the boat out a little more this time now that he's laid the groundwork, and though to many something like Pacific Rim will always be cheeseball nostalgia-bait, the huge-scale action sequences will surely be something to see either way.
