One of the most puzzling horror projects awaiting release right now is Soulm8te - a sci-fi erotic thriller spin-off from the M3GAN franchise, centered around a grieving man who buys a female android to cope with the loss of his wife.
Despite being filmed in late 2024 and initially set to release this past January, Soulm8te still hasn't come out.
Some have speculated that the box office failure of M3GAN 2.0 led Blumhouse to lose interest, while reports later emerged that it was being shopped around to other distributors after Universal backed away from it.
As dire a picture as this paints of the film's quality, not all hope is lost - it may simply be that Soulm8te isn't quite the commercial horror-thriller Universal was initially banking on.
After all, a recent MPA rating describes "strong violence, gore, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language," which sure sounds like a far cry from the more mainstream-friendly content of the M3GAN movies.
Plus, with the film being directed by Kate Dolan - whose debut You Are Not My Mother turned a lot of heads back in 2021 - it's tough to imagine Soulm8te being mere low-effort schlock.
