Throughout his storied career, Johnny Depp has certainly demonstrated his penchant and fondness for disappearing into characters, and next up he'll have quite the opportunity to do that when he plays Ebeneezer Scrooge in a new take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
Given Depp's undeniable career slump in recent years, in part due to his notable legal issues and general perception as controversial, it's honestly surprising that any studio would cast him in such a huge role right now.
After all, no Hollywood adaptation of A Christmas Carol is going to come cheap, even with a filmmaker as thrifty as Ti West (X, Pearl, MaXXXine) at the helm, and so it will require a substantial box office return to make a profit.
While Depp absolutely has the acting ability to deliver a memorable and intriguing Scrooge, he's simply so far from the casting choice anyone would expect in this day age.
