20 Well-Known Movie "Facts" That Are Actually Bulls**t
9. Denny Was Always Meant To Be Retarded - The Room
It's not surprising that The Room's director, Tommy Wiseau, changed his mind about Denny's character after the film was declared an unexpected bad movie masterpiece - in doing so, it made Wiseau look far more self-aware, as if he were in on the joke. Denny, of course, as played by actor Philip Haldiman, was never supposed to be retarded in the movie that Tommy Wiseau originally envisioned. In the wake of The Room's utter failure to be coherent, and given that Denny - who looked twenty-eight but acted thirteen - came across as (for the lack of a better word) "retarded," Wiseau just went along with it when fans branded him as such, proclaiming that Denny had, in fact, been retarded all along. Truth is, Wiseau never intended as such and has retroactively changed his opinion regarding the matter. Haldiman states that Wiseau never mentioned anything of the sort to him during production, nor was it mentioned in the script at any point, either. So don't believe the director of the movie on this one: Denny ain't retarded!
