One of the year's most disappointing films to date, Bliss is the latest mind-bending effort from filmmaker Mike Cahill (Another Earth), attempting to collide metaphysical concepts with a character drama about drug addiction.

In addition to being marketed totally wrong - the trailers sold it as a straight-up sci-fi film - Bliss is ambitious to a fault, its messy grasp on its own internal logic proving more frustrating than intriguing.

Salma Hayek and Owen Wilson make a solid effort to prop the sloppy script up, but considering how totally insane this movie is, it's shocking how often tedium also sets in.

A bold swing and a miss will almost always be more worthwhile than simply lazy filmmaking, though Bliss might make you second-guess that maxim.
