20 Incredible Recent Movies That FLOPPED
17. Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma
Jane Schoenbrun's third feature Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma marked another tectonic leap forward for the filmmaker, serving as both a love letter to the slasher genre and a giddy deconstruction of it, girded by its brilliant hand-crafted style and two incredible central performances from Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson.
Though Schoenbrun's brand exists entirely outside the mainstream, many nevertheless hoped that Camp Miasma might be their first breakout indie hit, especially with the film rocking a fairly modest $10 million budget and horror fans being basically insatiable.
Yet as of mid-September, the film is sitting at only around $8 million worldwide, which while a step up from the $5.4 million final haul of Schoenbrun's previous work, I Saw the TV Glow, isn't quite the boost you'd expect for a follow-up with far more marketing and a bonafide A-list cast member in Gillian Anderson.
Granted, distributor Mubi specialises in art-house fare that often doesn't turn a profit theatrically, so they're probably not too surprised by this, though will surely be hoping that it has a long tail on streaming.
