20 Recent Box Office Flops Everyone Saw Coming

9. The Strangers: Chapter 3

The Strangers Chapter 3
Lionsgate

There is no better recent example of the law of diminishing returns than Renny Harlin's critically panned The Strangers reboot trilogy.

The three slasher films were shot back-to-back with a budget of $8.5 million each, and while Chapter 1 grossed a rock solid $48.2 million, the worse-received Chapter 2 settled at a dire $22 million.

With Chapter 2 raking in less than half of what the first did, it was fair to assume that interest would drop violently off a cliff for Chapter 3, and that's exactly what happened.

Chapter 3 finished its run at a brutal $10.6 million - less than half of Chapter 2 and less than one-quarter of Chapter 1.

Considering that Harlin's films were widely panned by critics and audiences alike, it was an extremely predictable outcome, and one that's probably tainted the Strangers brand for the next decade - until Lionsgate inevitably tries again.
