Crime 101 was rather puzzlingly sent out to die by Amazon and Sony despite actually being rather good.

This star-studded thriller from terrific filmmaker Bart Layton (The Impostor, American Animals) hit cinemas back in February with suspiciously minimal marketing, which combined with a generic title and trailer that painted it as a Heat knock-off didn't exactly sell it to well to the masses.

On top of this, the review embargo lifted a mere two days before Crime 101 hit cinemas, where to the surprise of many it received largely positive notices.

Yet this was too little, too late, as most had seemingly already made up their minds, ensuring the film ultimately grossed just $72.9 million globally, falling far short of recouping even its $90 million price tag.

While it's clear where a lot of that money went, Crime 101 is yet further proof that the mid-budget genre film is a tricky sell in the current theatrical climate.
