21 Best Films Of The 21st Century By Genre
11. Horror - It Follows
There have been a stack of good and truly woeful Horror films this century, which pretty much is in keeping with tradition for the genre. The unfortunate rise of torture porn with the likes of the Hostel franchise and Saw sequels was a definite blight, but there was still some top horror flicks produced that were innovative while giving us some good scares.
Films in The Conjuring universe produced a brooding atmosphere and a continued sense of dread throughout, while Get Out brilliantly integrated modern day social issues into its thrills. But for the top entry on this list, the low budget 2014 hit It Follows takes the gold, a horror film that simply refuses to let up. Avoiding the typical jump scare formula, the terror here lies in the fact that the villain is constantly in sight, never stopping in its pursuit of its victim.
The film follows young college student Jay, who is seemingly kidnapped after making love with her new boyfriend. It is soon revealed that Jay has inherited a curse that is effectively a death sentence, unless she can find someone else to sleep with to pass the dreaded curse on.
The film could easily have become quite crass in nature, but instead proved to be an innovative exploration of teenage sexuality and the risks teens take, while simultaneously scaring the hell out of the viewer so we'll never want to make love again. The fact that the villain literally never stops and can appear at random and in any form, means we are never allowed to relax.
