24 Confirmed New Disney Films (& 24 Rumoured) Coming 2020-27

26. PREDICTED - Shang-Chi

Marvel Comics Shang Chi
Marvel Comics

Release Date: 7th May, 2021

In a fairly surprising move, not so long ago Deadline announced that Shang-Chi - Marvel's master of kung-fu - is getting his own MCU movie, written by Dave Callaham, who also penned Wonder Woman 1984 for Warner Bros.

Borne out of Marvel's acquisition of the Fu-Manchu licence (he's his son), Shang-Chi has been painted as the protector of New York's Chinatown and can claim to be the most skilled martial artist in the Marvel universe. Marvel have identified him as an opportunity to follow up the success of Black Panther and "[introduce] a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers."

Anything that helps with Asian representation is great.

25. PREDICTED - The Jungle Book 2

Disney

Release Date: 28th May 2021

Jon Favreau has been VERY busy within the halls of Disney in the last few years, from his MCU role as Happy Hogan, to directing The Lion King, and creating Disney Plus series The Mandalorian. It's a relationship that works well for both, and will continue for a while yet.

Favreau's great work on The Jungle Book is what got him The Lion King gig in the first place, and it's expected he'll be back for another instalment at some point, with Disney confirming the film back in 2016. Once he's free of that (and Star Wars), he can start to work on this, and a May release date makes sense (the first released in April and made big bucks), with the story set to delve deeper into Rudyard Kipling's works.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
