25 Definitively Best Movies EVER (According To Critics AND Fans)

16. Dr. Strangelove (1964)

President Merkin Muffley From Dr Strangelove
Columbia Pictures

Score: 92

Considering the state of spoof and satire since Scary Movie became the unfortunate gold standard for that sort of comedy, it's a little alien to consider that one of the best movies of all time should be a political satire with such brazenly comic aspirations. But thanks to Stanley Kubrick's razor-sharp mind and great performances by Peter Sellers, Dr Strangelove is one of the greatest comedies ever made.

Most impressively, it was an absolute trail-blazer. In the same way that Kubrick's The Shining, 2001, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket felt like reinventions of their genre, there was nothing like Dr Strangelove at the time of its release and nor has there been since.

Such is the film's masterful wit and intellect that it somehow feels completely relevant now, even without the context of the Cold War to anchor it to.
