25 Films That Intentionally Spoil Other Films

21. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

Swordfish John Travolta
New Line Cinema

Mockumentary high school satire Drop Dead Gorgeous takes all the tropes of the teen movie and spins them into black comedy gold. Michael Patrick Jann’s film takes us through the trials and tribulations of a beauty pageant in the conservative US town of Mount Rose, Minnesota, where the girls involved will do anything - and we mean anything - to get their hands on the prize and make it to the national Sarah Rose Cosmetics American Teen Princess Pageant.

With a stacked cast that features Kirstie Alley, Ellen Barkin, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Allison Janney, and Amy Adams, and is led by Kirsten Dunst, we are treated to a hyper-colour rendering of the American pageant scene, with murder, mayhem, and a biting script from Lona Williams. The irony is laid on thick and, not content to just send up the subject matter, Williams also plays a few jokes on the audience.

The beauty pageant contestants have to come up with skills and performances to wow the judges and get their scores, and several of them are forced to seek out the refuge of the pretty yet talentless: the dramatic monologue. This includes one contestant narrating and re-enacting scenes from Soylent Green, including the Charlton Heston line, "Soylent Green is people!" And, delivered on a pageant stage, it’s as funny as it is spoiler-y.
