25 Films That Intentionally Spoil Other Films
20. Chasing Amy (1997)
The Empire Strikes Back contains one of the biggest cinematic reveals of all time, and, as a result, has been parodied, spoiled, and referenced out the wazoo. But that doesn’t mean certain filmmakers don’t have love for the other Star Wars movies, or that they haven’t found their own unique ways to spoil them. Enter, Kevin Smith.
Chasing Amy, Smith’s third and most critically acclaimed film, follows comic book artist Holden McNeil (Ben Affleck), who is caught trying to balance his awkward love for his lesbian friend Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams) and the acerbic friendship of his flatmate and comic book inker Banky Edwards (Jason Lee). Smith is a big fan of comic books, and there is plenty of comic book shop chat and lore throughout Chasing Amy, but there are also several references to the original (and only, in 1997) trilogy of Star Wars films.
The most notable of these references comes during African-American activist writer Hooper’s (Dwight Ewell) convention speech. Hooper has a heated exchange with Holden and Banky about Return of the Jedi, including Lando Calrissian flying the Millennium Falcon, white kids blowing up the Death Star, and Vader’s reveal as a white man inside a black suit, before Hooper pulls a gun and shoots Banky. And the funniest thing of all? It’s all staged to boost sales of Hooper’s comic book.
