Playing it by the books doesnt mean the filmmakers gave up on dropping a few hidden messages for their more academic viewers though, and the killers identity is revealed at many points during the film, if you look closely. The crest for Pendleton University, the college in which all the stabbings take place, includes a small motto beneath. In English it reads: the best friend did it.
