25 Highest Grossing Movies Of All-Time - Ranked

6. The Dark Knight Rises

#13 - $1.084 billion Following the success of The Dark Knight and Inception, everyone expected The Dark Knight Rises - a movie which both director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale repeatedly claimed was the finale to their Batman series - to do extremely well at the box office. And it did, earning over $1 billion worldwide, but it will be never known how well it might have done had a tragic shooting in an American cinema not taken place during a midnight screening. Fearing that copycats might imitate this horrific act, many moviegoers decided against seeing The Dark Knight Rises during its opening weekend. As a result, it ended up debuting with at least $30 million less than many analysts had initially expected. There are also those who said that it failed struggled because it wasn't a patch on The Dark Knight, which is a bit off; Nolan still delivered an interesting end to the story of Batman, doing what the comic books never have in giving the Caped Crusader's story an ending. Some fanboys hated that, but as a finale to Nolan's time with Batman, it worked. Some silly leaps in logic (the question of how exactly Bruce Wayne got back to Gotham City is still being debated today) do stop The Dark Knight Rises from ever topping its predecessor, however.
