SPECTRE begins with the lead character travelling to Mexico City while the Day of the Dead parade is being performed. Although reception on the film was mixed, critics agreed that the opening scene was well-paced and astoundingly shot.

But do you know what is the most amazing thing about this scene?

The Day of the Dead parade that Bond visits was totally made up for the movie.

Now, don't get me wrong. The Day of the Dead is a big deal in Mexico and has been officially celebrated since the 1960s. But there was no parade or giant cigar-chomping skeleton floats as is depicted in this film.

This posed a problem. Because Bond is a popular across the world, the tourism skyrockets in any location immediately after it appears in one of the films.

So, what happens when millions of people come to Mexico City to see the parade... and there is no parade?

Well, the Mexican government organised a national parade depicted in the same way as SPECTRE every year during the Day of the Dead. Since then, tourists have flocked to the area each year to admire the parade, clueless that it didn't exist prior to 2016.
