25 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Summer 2017 - Ranked
19. Cars 3
Release Date: June 16th
Billed As: The end-cap to Jon Lasseter's personal Pixar passion project trilogy, with a more adult focus (hopefully) and similar issues of abandonment and redundancy seen throughout Toy Story.
Hype: Cars gets way too much hate, considering it's still a hugely entertaining movie (why wouldn't it be? Doc Hollywood was great and it's essentially just a rip off). The sequel wasn't very good, admittedly, but writing off the appeal of the characters based on one franchise chapter is just dumb. Ask Iron Man, Batman and Thor about that one.
The smartest thing about Cars 3 is the story, which is turning focus back to an underdog sports movie, with echoes of Days Of Thunder, as Lightning McQueen is threatened with a challenge to his identity (and with redundancy and replacement). It's essentially an old gunslinger/Rocky movie, and that's the most interesting thing that's ever happened in this series.
