Billed As: Mel Gibson tackles the story of US Army medic Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector awarded the Medal of Honor for single-handedly saving the lives of over 75 of his comrades while under constant enemy fire during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.
Hype: Mel Gibson might be a figure of controversy thanks to some of his more "colourful" political opinions, but he's still a great director, and in Doss' story he has something magic: a great story and a unique spin on a well-worn genre. It's effectively an anti-War film, and the emotional weight in there is bound to be considerable to say the least.
The film received a ten minute standing ovation at Venice Film Festival, which would be a good indication of its quality if it wasn't for the fact that film festival audiences are sycophants.
