17. Swallows & Amazons - Kelly MacDonald

On paper, Swallows and Amazons - which stars minor supporting Harry Potter actor Kelly MacDonald (who played the ghost of Helena Ravenclaw) - sounds like a film from a forgotten time. Rather than looking at wizards or ghosts or secret space missions for kids, it follows two families of children over the course of a summer holiday as they play at war, sailing and basically express their imaginations in an Enid Blyton sort of terribly English way. It's directed by Call The Midwife's Philippa Lowthorpe, so don't expect explosions or mystical danger, but as with the 1970s original, it should be all about the power of relationships and imagination.
