25 Shocking CGI Movie Moments That Left You Speechless

20. The Scorpion King - The Mummy Returns

This entry will not only go to show just how bad the visual effects were in The Mummy Returns, but it will also reinforce somewhat just how big of an achievement the creation of Gollum was in The Two Towers.

In 2002, Gollum blew the collective minds of anyone who looked upon him, whereas just one year earlier, the effects on another person-turned-monster in The Mummy Returns were unfathomably worse. Yes, The Lord of the Rings didn't have to worry about Gollum looking specifically like Andy Serkis, while Mathayus did have to look like Dwayne Johnson, but the results speak for themselves.

In the 2001 sequel to The Mummy, Johnson's Mathayus transformed into a giant scorpion/human hybrid, the big reveal of which was painfully underwhelming.

Interrupting the big fight between Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), the Rock-faced beast burst through the door looking like something out of a video game, and a bad one at that. Even for the time, and especially considering the blockbuster had a reported budget of an eye-watering $98 million, this was bad. Apparently, this wasn't enough money to prize Johnson away from his wrestling career for long enough to get a proper amount of reference material for the job.
