A major problem with the movie is its tone: one minute it's all about wise-cracking jokes and ribbing, and the next it serves up some genuinely disturbing reflections on the realities of being transformed into a superhero. For instance, in the moments after the accident, Reed is on the floor of the lab and can see what appears to be a burning corpse, which is clearly Johnny, and then he can hear Ben, who has now turned to rock, begging for help. Later, Johnny struggles to get to grips with being on fire constantly, and Ben is simply terrified of what he has become. They're some of the movie's most effective moments, but clash harshly with the oft-jovial tone and things like the silly social networking references. Either decide to be goofy like the 2005 and 2007 films or go full-out for the Nolan-esque grit.
