3 Ups & 7 Downs From The Legend Of Tarzan

Downs:7. The Frequently Awful CGI

The Legend Of Tarzan
Warner Bros.

We begin with something that's been evident ever since the release of the first trailer: this movie has staggeringly bad CGI. Though the apes on occasion actually look pretty good, for the most part both human and animal animation is incredibly unconvincing, most noticeably when Tarzan is robotically swinging through the jungle and is either too shiny or too blurry to pass as an actual person.

The climactic stampede sequence is also hugely problematic, as well as a number of the jungle chases, which fail to convince that they're anything more than actors running around a green screen-laden soundstage.

For a $180 million movie, it's absurd that the effects fall so flat, and make it hard to pull much enjoyment out of the action sequences or feel immersed in this world.
