3 Ups & 7 Downs From The Legend Of Tarzan

6. Poor Pacing & Plot Structure

The Legend Of Tarzan Baby
Warner Bros.

It's clear that Warners were trying to mount the film as a Batman Begins-esque launching pad for a new Tarzan franchise, and so the film delves into the origins of the character through a series of flashbacks...which are nonchalantly shoved into the film whenever David Yates feels like it.

The result is a film that continually stifles its own momentum: just when things are about to get going, another cursory flashback that reveals little of interest shows up, making long stretches of the film feel like an absolute chore to get through.

The movie is a fairly svelte 110 minutes in length, though feels exhaustingly long by the end. From the cluttered first act through to the rushed finale, it feels like a film that was most likely mangled in the edit suite, though it's the excessive flashbacks that truly stop it from ever gaining much forward movement.
