30 Best Hidden Gem Horror Movies Perfect For Halloween

8. Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter

By the 1970s, Hammer’s once-revered grip on horror was slipping, so the studio tried to revitalize its brand with a handful of stylish, daring genre films like  Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde, and The Vampire Lovers. Most of those such movies went overlooked at the time and flopped, but now in retrospect, stand among Horror's most impressive efforts, including rousing horror–action hybrid, Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter.

Skilled swordsman Captain Kronos (Horst Janson) and his right-hand man Professor Grost (John Cater) are called to a village where a woman has been mysteriously drained of her youth. With the help of scene-stealing gypsy Carla (Caroline Munro), they investigate the case and find out the culprit to be a life-draining vampire, setting the stage for a swashbuckling finale.

Director Brian Clemens infuses Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter with energetic style, blending classic Hammer tropes - gothic atmosphere, eerie UK settings, alluring women - with fresh verve, brisk action, and a devil-may-care attitude. The result feels like the exciting start of a franchise that sadly never got off the ground.
