30 Horror Movie Survivors Who Probably Wished They'd Died
18. Coming Home In The Dark - Hoagie
Coming Home in the Dark is a bleak, full-throttle horror road-trip from New Zealand, centring around a family drive gone horribly wrong. Hoaggie (Erik Thomson) and his wife Jill (Miriama McDowell) are taken hostage by two violent drifters and by the end, Hoagie is another character who's gone through hell and back and back again.
First up, he's possibly lost his entire family. The two drifters - Mandrake (Daniel Gillies) and Tubs (Matthias Luafutu) - murder his two sons early on and Jill later jumps into a river to escape. Her fate is left unknown but regardless, it's difficult to imagine their relationship remaining intact, especially given what is revealed about Hoagie's past.
It turns out that the two attackers were at an abusive school where Hoagie was a teacher. He was perfectly aware of how appallingly the kids there were being treated, but didn't do a thing to stop it. So, living with this huge bereavement, the trauma of his near-death experience and the knowledge that his own mistakes sowed the seeds of this whole thing... it's hard not to feel awful for Hoagie, even if he was no saint.
