30 Horror Movie Survivors Who Probably Wished They'd Died
4. Hereditary - Peter
Few horror movie characters this century went through more than this poor kid.
Early in Hereditary, when Peter Graham (Alex Wolff) was driving his sister to the hospital, she leaned out of the car window and was decapitated, leaving him with crippling guilt and driving a wedge between him and his parents. Throughout the movie, Peter is driven further and further into madness before, during the picture's bleak finale, both of his parents are killed horribly, he attempts to kill himself, and the cult responsible for all of the family's suffering finally transfers the soul of a demon into him.
All along, the cult's plan was to transfer this demon, named Paimon, to a new host. A male host was always the preference, and through subtle clues that director Ari Aster cleverly littered throughout the film, it would appear that members of Paimon's cult have been orchestrating everything from the off, including the death of Peter's sister Charlie (Milly Shapiro). Essentially, their entire plan was to brutalize Peter until he was psychologically vulnerable enough to be possessed. He now has to live the rest of his life possessed by the same demon that destroyed his family.
And the worst thing of all? Peter didn't do anything to cause or deserve all of this; he just so happened to have a grandmother who was part of a cult. This was all bad luck.
