30 Perfect Horror Scenes Of The 2020s

18. Together - 2 Become 1

Together Ending
Neon

At its best, horror uses the macabre and the Other to highlight our deepest wounds and society's deepest fears in the darkest ways imaginable. That's exactly what Together's climax does - it represents co-dependence in romantic couplings in a literal, horrifying and unforgettable manner, as struggling couple Millie and Tim (played, in a neat meta-move, by real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco) find their bodies are starting to fuse together as part of a supernatural ritual.

They resist for as long as they can but, after Millie sustains a fatal wound, they accept their fate and fuse together in a deeply discomforting sequence. In particular, their eyeballs joining together... icky stuff. This is something you'll never be able to unsee, not that you'd necessarily want to. There's a strange undercurrent of sweetness to this entire sequence that makes it unmistakably poignant, as much as it'll also make you a bit queasy. Maybe you could call it sickly sweet then?

Also, the music choice of the Spice Girls' 2 Become 1? That was an ingenious needle-drop, one that'd make James Gunn proud.
