30 Perfect Horror Scenes Of The 2020s

4. Nosferatu - The End Of Count Orlok

Nosferatu Orlok

Much like the silent classic it adapted, Nosferatu is a horror tragedy in which an innocent woman must sacrifice herself to stop Count Orlok's (Bill Skarsgard) reign of terror. Writer-director Robert Eggers fully understood this, and concluded the movie with a devastating emotional gut-punch.

2024's outstanding Nosferatu remake took full advantage of its longer run-time and more detailed character work in order to make the character of Ellen Hutter (Lily Rose-Depp) a more developed, emphatic character than in the original. You know her death is coming and does that make it any easier to take? Not in the slightest.

At the end, as in the original, Ellen allows Count Orlok (who has an evident desire for Ellen) to drink her blood, distracting him long enough for the sunlight to come through the window and kill him. While 2024's Nosferatu isn't quite as outstanding as the 1922 masterpiece, it does arguably do this scene quite a bit better.

Alongside the fantastic visuals, it does several things that the original could never have got away with. The gore flows freely and the scene has an unmistakable sexual tone, highlighting the complex connection between Ellen and Orlok. As much as horror remakes are generally a terrible idea, in the right hands they can reinterpret the source material in powerful ways, as this example shows.
