30 Perfect Horror Scenes Of The 2020s
2. Sinners - I Lied To You
There's a rather good meme online, which consists of a picture of the great Martin Scorsese extending his arms and the words 'Absolute Cinema' being written above him. There's a particular scene from Sinners, Ryan Coogler's stunning vampire musical set in the American South, which could be summed up by that meme.
The scene in question sees one of the main characters, Sammy (Miles Caton), performing his song I Lied to You in the new juke joint set up by the Smokestack Twins (both played by Michael B. Jordan) on opening night. His music is described as having the power of transcendence - it is so potent that it blurs the line between life and death, in other words.
And so, as Sammy performs his wonderful tune, the spirits of past and present fill the joint, with the roaming camera capturing this startling imagery in a stunningly beautiful, dream-like sequence that rivals the cinema of the late, great David Lynch in its transcendent surrealism.
It's pure movie magic, an exhilarating testament to artistic creativity and what film can actually do. In other words, it is absolute cinema, and it is freaking glorious.
