28. I AM Your Daughter - The Others

Say what you want about The Others, but it's a bloody clever ghost story. Or a reverse ghost story, if you want to be more specific.

The film takes everything you expect from a haunted house story - bumps in the night, a general sense of foreboding and bodily possession and turns it completely on its head with a twist that is satisfying, sad and scary all at once.

The most memorable moment comes when Nicole Kidman's unhinged mother seemingly finds her daughter playing, only to realise something has possessed her. What is it about old women that makes for such consistently terrifying scares?

After the twist reveals that Kidman and her children are actually the ghosts, this scene is completely transformed, but without that knowledge you get the twin perils of thinking you're either watching a possession or a woman completely losing her mind and attacking her own daughter. Either way, it's very effective.
