31 Scariest Movie Moments Of All Time

27. The Hobbling - Misery

As all beloved Youtube celebrities like myself will be painfully aware, there is nothing more terrifying than the notion of obsessive fans. Just like in the brilliant, awful Misery they might only want to love you, but it's never pretty and it does usually end with someone tied to a bed screaming.

Misery's crowning moment comes when Kathy Bates' Annie Wilkes - up to that point a mostly cheerful character with a bad temper and a little too much love for Paul Sheldon - discovers he's been snooping around her house. Her choice of retribution, of course, comes in the shape of a sledgehammer. The slow pull in on her explaining the history of hobbling as James Caan's face turns from pleading charm to squirming desperation is enough to make you clammy, and then boom, two broken ankles later and your day is ruined.

The film is the ultimate expression of rage against fans' sense of entitlement and ownership (take that Twitter eggs), and the smashing pay-off is as devastating as the eery build. Never. Upset. The. Fans.
