An American Werewolf In London may be remembered far more for the sickening, toe-curling transformation scene that remains one of the very best body shock horror moments ever, but it's more traditional monster movie attack scene is even more successful in chilling terms.

The fact that the scene is cliched beyond parody (there's even a creepy stranger warning the naive Yanks to go back) and is still just as powerful and as scary as the first attack in Jaws says everything about how well it's shot.

It has mist, it invites you to be just as scared as the victims and it shows just enough of the werewolf to imply its horrors instead of showing off too much. It's incredibly artful with the right touches of grotesqueness, sadness and weird farmer types to make a perfect storm that is delightfully ghoulish and entirely memorable.
